Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, speaking at NALSAR’s 22nd convocation, cautioned law graduates against taking hefty education loans of ₹50–70 lakh for foreign LL.M programs purely for prestige.
He emphasised that academic pursuits abroad should be driven by purpose and funding, preferably scholarships, and not peer pressure.
Justice Gavai urged students to consider investing in building their practice or chambers first and then pursuing postgraduate studies abroad once stable: “There is no age bar to learn… Go abroad not to escape, but to expand.”
He also flagged structural inequalities in legal education and stressed the need for strong fundamentals and mentorship.
