CJI Surya Kant Calls for Institutional Role for Retired Judges

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant recently advocated for institutionalising the engagement of retired judges in areas such as arbitration, legal education and public legal awareness.

He proposed creating a structured national registry of retired judges willing to contribute to alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms and other public roles.

Speaking at an event organised by the Association of Retired Judges of Supreme Court and High Courts, the CJI observed that retirement from the Bench should not mark the end of a judge’s contribution to the justice system.

He also suggested formal collaborations between retired judges’ associations, High Courts and Legal Services Authorities to better utilise judicial experience and expertise.
