CJI Surya Kant: Constitution Belongs to Every Citizen, Not Just the Privileged Few

Delivering the keynote address at the launch of Senior Advocate Indira Jaising’s memoir, 'The Constitution Is My Home', CJI Surya Kant stated that the Constitution belongs equally to all citizens.

Emphasising that constitutional protections are not a privilege reserved for wealthy cosmopolitans who can afford expensive legal processes and described Constitution as a "shared home" representing belonging and aspiration, he highlighted the legal system's capacity for self-correction.

Noting that transformative constitutional doctrines often originate from arguments molded by the Bar before becoming settled law. 

CJI Kant reminded the legal community, that judges and lawyers are merely temporary custodians tasked with ensuring the charter remains responsive to the marginalized and emerging democratic challenges.
