CJI Surya Kant Rebukes Sr Adv Mathews Nedumpara Over Remarks on Collegium

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant sharply rebuked senior advocate Mathews Nedumpara during the Supreme Court’s mentioning session for making “reckless submissions” while seeking urgent listing of a plea against the collegium system. The CJI warned him against continued misbehavior, recalling past interactions in Chandigarh and Delhi.

Nedumpara alleged that Constitution Benches were being formed for “Adani and Ambani” while common citizens’ issues were ignored, drawing strong objection from the Bench.

The petition sought revival of the NJAC, struck down in Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association v. Union of India, which restored the collegium.

The exchange underscores courtroom discipline, finality of judgments, and limits of advocacy in constitutionally settled matters.
