The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that over 100 children fell ill after consuming a mid-day meal allegedly contaminated by a dead snake at a government school in Mokama, Patna, on April 24, 2025.
The cook reportedly removed the snake and still served the food. Around 500 students had eaten the meal.
The NHRC issued notices to the Bihar Chief Secretary and Patna SSP, seeking a detailed report within two weeks, including the health status of affected children.
The incident has raised serious concerns about food safety and hygiene in school meal programs.
