Death Sentence Stayed in Cannibalism Murder Case

Death Sentence Stayed in Cannibalism Murder Case

  • Case Name: Sunil Rama Kuchkoravi vs. State of Maharashtra
  • Judge(s): Justices Surya Kant, Pankaj Mithal

Petitioner Sunil Kuchkoravi murdered his 63-year-old mother, Yallama, in 2017, cooked her organs, and ate parts of her body. He was sentenced to death in 2021, and the High Court upheld this in October 2024.

The High Court deemed the death sentence appropriate, describing the crime as "rarest of rare" due to Kuchkoravi’s pathological cannibalism and lack of potential for reformation. The Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the execution, pending a review.

The case will be reviewed by the Supreme Court on 14 April 2025.
