The Supreme Court is addressing ration card distribution for 28 crore workers registered on the e-Shram portal. Despite orders to issue cards by November 2024, the goverment cites National Food Security Act ( NFSA ) limits based on the 2011 Census.
Activist Prashant Bhushan argued that population growth and increased poverty post-COVID make many eligible for aid.
The government said 81.35 crore people already receive benefits and criticized the case as unnecessary interference.
The lack of a 2021 Census is also questioned for fair distribution. A hearing in January 2025 will address ration distribution and unemployment solutions.
