The Sessions Court upheld social activist Medha Patkar’s conviction for defamation under Section 500 of the IPC but released her on one-year probation, citing her public service and good conduct.
The conviction stemmed from a defamatory press note issued against VK Saxena, in 2000, which the court held was intended to damage his reputation.
Earlier, a magistrate sentenced her to five months in jail and imposed a ₹10 lakh fine.
The Sessions Court reduced the fine and waived imprisonment. Patkar has now moved the Delhi High Court, arguing she did not circulate the press note in question.
