The Delhi High Court directed the Delhi Government to expedite the finalisation of the Advocate Protection Bill, citing rising concerns after the 2023 murder of advocate Virender Kumar.
The government informed that the draft is ready and will be shared with the Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations for feedback before being presented to the Council of Ministers. The Court directed the government to file a fresh status report by May 28.
The Court observed that such violence undermines advocates' right to practice under Article 19(1)(g) & Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The Court also noted that Rajasthan is the only state that has enacted a law protecting legal professionals.
