Delhi High Court: Family Objections Cannot Restrict Two Consenting Adults’ Right To Choose Their Life Partners

The Delhi High Court directed the police to extend protection to Prince Tyagi and his wife after they eloped against her family’s wishes and began receiving life‐threatening calls, messages and video calls.

Justice Sanjeev Narula held that Article 21 guarantees two consenting adults the right to choose life partners and live in peace, and family disapproval cannot restrict that autonomy.

Noting the Supreme Court’s precedents, the Court directed the couple to share their direct contact details and to the station’s 24×7 hotline, and promptly register any threat complaints.

The couple’s counsel provided their residence and contact information to the investigating officer.
