Delhi High Court Questions Centre’s Power to Impose Additional Cuts on ‘Udaipur Files’ Movie

The Delhi High Court has questioned the Central government’s authority to impose six more cuts on the film Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act.

The film, based on the 2022 Udaipur killing, had already undergone 61 cuts after two levels of review. The plea was filed by accused Mohammed Javed, who argued that the film could prejudice his ongoing trial and violate his right to a fair trial under Article 21

The Court observed that the Centre’s revisional powers only extend to certifying, denying, or suspending a film and not editing it. The matter is next listed on August 1.
