The Delhi High Court has ruled that a delay in trial is not an adequate ground for bail, especially in the case of a grave offence where the evidence directly links the accused to the crime.
Further, the bench noted that even though the right to a speedy trial is of the utmost importance, it cannot be stretched.
The Court made these observations while dealing with a case that involved the bail plea of a hired killer, who had shot the victim point-blank in a deserted place.
The High Court stated that the nature and gravity of the offence and the societal impact that the release of the accused would have could not be overlooked.
