The Delhi High Court has directed the Indian government to develop guidelines for processing passport applications of medically incapacitated individuals without requiring their physical presence.
Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela questioned why remote verification, similar to will registration, couldn’t be implemented.
The court issued notices to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs, seeking responses within three weeks.
It suggested enabling data collection from applicants' residences through mobile units or digital tools, ensuring accessibility.
This move aims to make passport services more inclusive and equitable for all citizens.
