Delhi High Court Declares ‘WIPRO’ a Well-Known Trademark

The Delhi High Court has recognised “WIPRO” as a well-known trademark under Section 2(1)(zg) of Trade Marks Act, 1999. , affirming its longstanding reputation and exclusive association with Wipro Enterprises Pvt. Ltd.

The decision arose from a suit against Shivam Udhyog, which sought to register “SHIVAM UDHYOG WIPRO WIRE MESH.”

Justice Tejas Karia noted Wipro’s continuous use since 1977, extensive domestic and international registrations, and significant promotional investments.

The Court granted a permanent injunction against infringement and declared WIPRO a well-known mark. Upon summons, the defendants withdrew their application and undertook not to use Wipro’s mark.
