The Delhi High Court refused bail to a man accused of harassing his pregnant wife for dowry, which allegedly led to her suicide within nine months of marriage.
The accused used to demand a motorcycle and a gold chain from the deceased and would quarrel with her for not fulfilling those demands.
The Court rejected the argument that the wife’s parents were mere “private witnesses,” stating that a daughter’s parents do not become outsiders after marriage.
The Court relied on the father’s testimony, who witnessed the victim being harassed during a video call, and highlighted the mental trauma endured by families who often remain silent in the hope of preserving marriage.
