Delhi High Court Directs BCI and BCD to Frame Financial Aid Policy for Families of Deceased Lawyers

The Delhi High Court has directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) to frame a permanent policy to provide financial support to families of deceased lawyers.

A division bench observed that advocates’ families often depend entirely on their earnings, leaving them vulnerable after a lawyer’s death.

The order came on a plea by a deceased lawyer's mother whose son’s claim was rejected under the Chief Minister Advocate Welfare Scheme, as he died before it came into force.

The Court also noted that the BCD was extending financial assistance to the family for about 2 years after the advocate's death. The Court welcomed BCD’s interim support but sought a long-term framework.
