The Delhi High Court directed the Central Government to nominate members to a newly constituted deepfakes committee, formed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The Court’s order came in response to two petitions filed regarding the growing problem of unregulated deepfakes, particularly their creation and dissemination via mobile apps and online platforms.
The court also instructed the committee to consider the petitioners' suggestions and examine global regulations. MeitY was ordered to submit a report by February 2025.
The move comes amid rising concerns over AI-generated deepfakes in India, with calls for stronger regulatory measures.
