The Delhi High Court directed the Union Government to comply with the Supreme Court's order regarding a petition to rename India as “Bharat.”
The petition claimed that despite a 2020 Supreme Court directive, no action was taken. It urged the amendment of Article 1 of the Constitution to replace "India" with "Bharat/Hindustan," citing Constituent Assembly debates from 1948.
The petitioner argued that "India" does not reflect the country’s culture and that renaming it would remove colonial influence.
The court instructed the government counsel to expedite compliance with the Supreme Court's order.
