The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a PIL seeking to restrain the BCCI from referring to its squad as the Indian cricket team.
The Division Bench dismissed the plea as a ‘sheer waste of court time,’ noting it made little sense to deny recognition to a team representing the nation internationally.
The petition argued that the BCCI, as a private society, is neither a National Sports Federation nor a “public authority” under Section 2(h) of the RTI Act. It claimed that calling its squad “team India” misrepresented the nation and potentially breached the Emblems and Names Act and Flag Code.
The Court refused all relief and struck down the petition.
