The Delhi High Court directed the Bar Council of Delhi to ensure that its elections are held and completed by January 31, 2026.
The order came on a plea highlighting that the statutory five-year tenure of the Council expired in 2023, yet no elections were conducted.
The petitioner argued this violated Sections 8 and 8A of the Advocates Act, which fix the term at five years with only a limited extension.
The Court referred to its earlier directions in M. Varadhan v. Union of India, which mandated the Bar Council of India to oversee timely State Bar Council elections.
