The Delhi High Court expressed strong displeasure over lawyers’ personal details being made public and used by Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) election candidates to send unsolicited calls and WhatsApp messages.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia said that lawyers’ privacy cannot be violated and noted that many advocates are being added to WhatsApp groups without consent.
The Court was hearing a PIL by Advocate Shashank Singh, who highlighted that the BCD’s updated voter list disclosed photographs, addresses, and mobile numbers, creating harassment and security risks.
The Court issued notice to the BCD, BCI and Central government, returnable in two weeks.
