Delhi High Court Seeks DMRC Reply on Plea to Rename ‘Supreme Court’ Metro Station in Hindi

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) informed the Delhi High Court that changing the Hindi name of the Supreme Court metro station from "सुप्रीम कोर्ट" to "सर्वोच्च न्यायालय" will cost ₹40-45 lakh.

It could lead to more litigation for similar changes, burdening public funds. A PIL by Umesh Sharma seeks a change to match Hindi usage.

A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia questioned why not, citing examples like Vishwavidyalaya for Delhi University and Kendriya Sachivalaya stations.

The court rejected DMRC's fears of multiple cases as no defence against the Official Languages Act. It ordered DMRC to file a reply by April 24, 2026.
