DPIIT pushes AI Copyright Feedback Deadline to Feb 6

The DPIIT extended the deadline for stakeholder feedback on the proposed generative AI and copyright policy to February 6, 2026.

The move follows a working paper that assessed how current copyright principles apply to AI model training and commercial rollout.

A proposal includes a committee fixing a royalty rate tied to AI firms’ global revenue, payable only after a model is commercialised. The framework also suggests retroactive payment for past training data.

Once the prescribed royalty is paid, AI companies may use publicly available copyrighted content without prior consent, balancing industry demand with creator compensation.
