Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on PIL Challenging Duty-Free Import of Yellow Peas

The Supreme Court has issued a notice on a Public Interest Litigation, which challenged the policy of the Centre to allow the duty-free import of yellow peas.

The petition, filed by the Kisan Mahapanchayat, contended that the policy has led to a fall in prices of soyabean, groundnut, urad, moong, etc, below the Minimum Support Price.

The Counsel for the petitioner also stated that the Government has previously imposed heavy duties and restrictions on such imports; however, the present situation is the complete opposite.

The Court has sought the Centre’s justification for the policy.
