‘Elections are Often Fought in Courts’: Supreme Court on Pleas Against Assam CM’s “Miya” Remarks

The Supreme Court observed that political battles are often fought in courts while hearing pleas alleging hate speech by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The petitions by CPI(M) and Annie Raja challenge a public speech and a video allegedly targeting the Muslim community, including remarks about “Miya voters” and a controversial animated shooting video.

The petitioners have sought registration of an FIR and an SIT probe, alleging violations of constitutional duties and criminal provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Court indicated that the matter would be examined at an appropriate stage.
