The Bar Council of India (BCI) has identified 13 fake law degrees from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, prompting a nationwide crackdown on fraudulent enrollments.
It directed all State Bar Councils to expedite the verification of advocates on their rolls, with fake enrollments to be referred to the BCI under Section 26(1) of the Advocates Act, 1961.
Non-compliance will be treated as a dereliction of duty and may invite potential dissolution under Rule 32 of the BCI Rules.
The Supreme Court, in Ajay Shankar Srivastava v. BCI, established a High-Powered Committee to oversee advocate verification.
