The Supreme Court granted the Haryana government three months to decide whether to grant a sanction to prosecute Ashoka University faculty member Ali Khan Mahmudabad over his Facebook posts on Operation Sindoor.
The Court noted that without sanction, the trial cannot proceed and observed that the case may be closed if the State takes a lenient view.
At the same time, the Court advised Mahmudabad to act responsibly if the State chooses not to press charges.
The Court clarified that any relief should not be treated as a licence for irresponsible social media comments. The interim stay on trial will continue meanwhile.
