UIDAI Informs Madras HC: Aadhaar Database Cannot Be Used to Identify Fingerprints of Deceased Person

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) informed the Madras High Court that matching the fingerprints of the deceased person with the Aadhaar database is neither technologically feasible nor legally permissible. 

Responding to a plea by Tamil Nadu Police seeking assistance in identifying an unknown body, UIDAI stated that Aadhaar authentication operates on a 1:1 basis, requiring an Aadhaar number for verification.

Consequently, matching fingerprints without a corresponding Aadhaar number is not possible.

Additionally, the Aadhaar Act, 2016, imposes strict restrictions on sharing biometric data, allowing exceptions only under national security concerns as specified in Section 33(2)
