The Supreme Court has ordered the constitution of two new election tribunals to adjudicate disputes arising out of State Bar Council elections.
The tribunals will be headed by former Supreme Court judges Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Hima Kohli.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi directed the Bar Council of India to obtain formal consent from the members and notify the tribunals within three days.
The move comes amid increasing litigation relating to bar council elections across States. The Court also directed State Bar Councils to preserve election records until disputes are resolved.
