Former Supreme Court Justice V Ramasubramanian appointed as NHRC chief

Former SC Judge V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the 9th Chairperson of the NHRC for a three-year term, succeeding Justice Arun Mishra.

His appointment, informed through a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs under  Section 3(2)(a) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, follows his retirement from SC in June 2023.

Justice Ramasubramanian played a key role in important cases, including demonetisation scheme in 2023 and setting aside an RBI circular, limiting cryptocurrency-related services.

His legal career spans over thirty years, including roles as a judge in Madras, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh HCs. After amendments in 2019, he is the second NHRC chairperson not to have served as CJI
