Karnataka High Court Pulls Up Zee Over Portrayal of Hindu Deities in Comedy Show

The Karnataka High Court strongly criticised Zee Entertainment over the portrayal of Hindu gods and mythological figures in a comedy show episode, questioning whether such depiction could be justified under the garb of free speech.

The Court observed that comedy cannot come at the cost of religious sentiments and remarked that displaying deities in a derogatory or trivial manner does not deserve indulgence. 

The Court granted interim protection from arrest to the show’s representatives, subject to their cooperation with the investigation. 

The Court reiterated that freedom of expression is not absolute and must be exercised responsibly.
