Georgia Becomes First U.S. State to Introduce Bill Recognising Hinduphobia as Hate Crime

Georgia in the US introduced Senate Bill 375 to formally recognize Hinduphobia under its hate crime and anti-discrimination laws.

The bipartisan bill seeks to amend the state’s penal code, defining Hinduphobia as "antagonistic, destructive, and derogatory attitudes and behaviors towards Hinduism and Hindus."

This move follows a 2023 county-level resolution condemning Hinduphobia. Advocacy groups like CoHNA have cited rising incidents of temple vandalism and hate crimes.

If passed, Georgia would become the first U.S. state to legally recognise Hinduphobia, offering clearer protections for Hindu individuals and communities. The bill is currently under committee review.
