Google Clears Legal Hurdle in UK Medical Data Case

  • Case Name: Mr. Andrew Prismall Vs Google UK Limited & others
  • Judge(s): Justice Nicola Davies, Justice Dingemans
  • Advocate(s): Justice Nicola Davies, Justice Dingemans

Google successfully defended a lawsuit brought by Andrew Prismall on behalf of 1.6 million people over the misuse of medical records.

In 2015, the Royal Free London NHS Trust transferred patient data to DeepMind Technologies for the development of a kidney injury app.

DeepMind’s data-sharing arrangement with the NHS Trust was subsequently found to have broken U.K. data protection law.

The Court of Appeal upheld the decision on December 11, 2024, citing insufficient evidence of data misuse and no clear privacy expectation.
