Govt Contributes to Court Backlog While Questioning Delays: Justice Nagarathna

Justice B.V. Nagarathna pointed out that while the government often raises concerns about delays in courts, it is also one of the biggest reasons behind the growing backlog of cases.

She observed that government departments frequently file appeals in a routine manner, even when it may not be necessary. This leads to cases moving through multiple levels of courts, increasing delays.

The judge also highlighted issues like lack of proper infrastructure and systemic problems within the legal system.

She stressed that real solutions require better decision-making by the government and broader reforms, rather than just criticising judicial delays.
