Govt. abolish ‘No-Detention Policy’ for classes V and VIII

The Central Government has abolished the no-detention policy for students in classes V and VIII across centrally governed schools under its jurisdiction and 50% of states and UTs.

With this change, students failing year-end examinations can reappear within two months. Those failing again will be held back and teachers will provide targeted support.

The decision follows the amendment made in the Right to Education (RTE) Act in 2019 and aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) finalized in 2023.

Proponents argue it will encourage accountability and academic rigor, while critics express concerns about potential stress and dropout rates. This change aims to foster competency-based education and holistic development.
