Govt introduces bill to ban online money games while promoting e-sports under regulatory framework

The Indian government has introduced the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha, proposing a full ban on online money gaming irrespective of whether games are based on skill or chance, and introducing stiff penalties, including making violations cognisable and non-bailable.

According to the draft, anyone offering online money gaming services in violation of the law will face imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to ₹1 crore, or both.

Simultaneously, the Bill marks a significant shift towards promoting e-sports, providing them with legal recognition and support.

It proposes the establishment of a dedicated regulatory authority to oversee online gaming, ensure player safety, and curb fraudulent or exploitative practices.
