A panel under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recommended that restaurants should declare whether they serve vegetarian or non-vegetarian food when applying for or renewing licenses.
According to reports, non-vegetarian outlets could be asked to disclose items such as beef or pork, while vegetarian restaurants must list their offerings.
The move, reportedly reviewed after a suggestion from the Uttar Pradesh government, aims to respect cultural dietary practices and ensure consumer transparency.
If a vegetarian restaurant switches to non-vegetarian service, a fresh license approval will be required. The government is likely to implement the measure in the coming months.
