Centre Restricts Content Takedown Powers to Senior Officers Under IT Rules

The Central government has amended Rule 3(1)(d) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, restricting content takedown powers to senior officials under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act.

Now, officers not below the rank of Joint Secretary or equivalent are authorised to issue takedown notices to intermediaries, while for police authorities, a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) or specially authorised officer is required.

Previously, lower-ranking officers had issued takedown orders. The amendments ensure accountability, transparency, and legal clarity, and will take effect from the 1st of next month.
