Gujarat High Court Takes Suo Motu Contempt Action Against Senior Advocate For VC Appearance With Beer Mug

The Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu contempt action against a Senior Advocate who appeared virtually in court on June 26, 2025, while drinking from a beer mug and speaking on the phone during proceedings. 

The court called this behaviour "outrageous" and damaging to the judiciary’s dignity. The court noted that senior lawyers are role models, and such actions can mislead young lawyers.

The court may reconsider his Senior Advocate status and has banned him from appearing virtually before the bench.

The Registry was asked to preserve the video, prepare a report, and inform the Chief Justice. Action under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 may follow.
