Gujarat High Court Upholds Civil Imprisonment for Man Who Sold Shop Despite Court Order

The Gujarat High Court has upheld a 30-day civil imprisonment order against a man who sold his shop despite a status quo order.

The man claimed he forgot the court directive due to his disability and sold the shop for medical reasons.

However, the Court rejected this explanation as vague and unconvincing. His lawyer also failed to suggest any specific property that could be attached as an alternative punishment.

Justice JL Odedra ruled that lower courts weren’t wrong in opting for imprisonment, and dismissed the petition, calling it “devoid of merit.”
