The Gujarat High Court upheld a prohibition on dangerous kite-flying threads, including those coated in glass and made from synthetic materials, in anticipation of Uttarayan.
The Court passed its ruling on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by two individuals who sought enforcement of directions issued by the State government in its two circulars issued in January 2023 and December 2024.
These circulars prohibited the use of Chinese lanterns, manjha, nylon/plastic dori (threads), and plastic threads coated with glass or other hazardous materials used for kite-flying during the Makar Sankranti festival (Uttarayan) celebrated in Gujarat.
Emphasizing the importance of safety for individuals, animals, and birds, the court confirmed the necessity of the ban despite potential disruptions to the festival.
