Gujarat High Court Rejects Plea Against UCC Panel Over Lack of Minority Representation

The Gujarat High Court has dismissed a plea challenging the composition of the State's Uniform Civil Code (UCC) committee for excluding minority members.

Justice Niral R Mehta held that the committee was formed through executive order under Article 162 and thus falls within the State’s discretionary powers.

The Court held that such administrative actions don’t warrant judicial interference unless a statutory violation is shown. The petitioner, Abdul Vahab Sopariwala, had sought reconstitution and wider consultation.

The Court found no prejudice caused by the committee’s formation, noting it remains open to input from all sections of society.
