SC Directs Restoration of 500-Year-Old Shaikh Ali Gumti, Restrains Commercial Use of Adjacent Park

The Supreme Court has ordered the restoration of the 500-year-old Shaikh Ali Gumti, which was found to be illegally occupied by the Defence Colony Welfare Association.

The Court barred the construction of badminton or basketball courts and banned kiosks or other commercial activity in the adjoining park to preserve its natural character. It also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to clear garbage and maintain the area.

Restoration is underway and expected to finish by August 2025. A notification under the Delhi Ancient and Historical Monument Act, 2004 is pending.
