The Karnataka High Court rejected petitions seeking SC/ST and OBC reservations in the Advocates Association, Bengaluru (AAB) governing council.
Justice R Devdas advised petitioners to approach the Supreme Court, citing a recent directive for 30% women’s representation issued under Article 142.
The High Court clarified it cannot issue similar orders under Article 226, as AAB's bye-laws lack caste-based reservation provisions.
While acknowledging that AAB has never had SC/ST/OBC office bearers, the Court suggested that if petitioners seek similar benefits, they should consult the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had previously mandated AAB to reserve 30% of seats for women lawyers.
