Tamil Nadu Moves Supreme Court over ₹2,151 crore Education Fund Freeze

The Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court under Article 131 of the Constitution, seeking the release of ₹2,151.59 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme for 2024–25.

The State claims that the Centre is withholding funds to compel adoption of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and PM SHRI Schools scheme, despite these not being legally binding.

Tamil Nadu argues this violates Articles 14, 21, 21A, 41, and 45, and disrupts the implementation of the RTE Act. Highlighting its two-language policy, the State has challenged the Centre's stance as unconstitutional coercion.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 12, 2025.
