On March 11, 2025, Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, introduced the Immigration and Foreigners Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha.
The bill seeks to modernize and consolidate India's immigration laws by replacing the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939, and The Foreigners Act, 1946.
It aims to enhance national security, streamline immigration procedures, and impose stricter penalties for violations.
Notably, it shifts the burden of proving legal status onto individuals rather than the state and allows denial of entry based on national security and foreign relations.
