India Post will discontinue its Registered Post service from September 1, 2025, merging it with Speed Post to modernise operations.
Registered Post, in service for over 50 years, saw declining demand due to digital communication and courier competition, with volumes falling 25% between 2011–12 and 2019–20.
While Speed Post offers faster delivery and tracking, it is 20–25% costlier, raising concerns for rural citizens, farmers, and small traders.
The change affects courts, educational institutions, and government departments, which must transition by September.
Registered Post, rooted in the colonial era, was valued for affordability, reliability, and legal validity; its end marks a nostalgic shift.
