In November 2024, India signed the final draft of the Design Law Treaty (DLT) negotiated by WIPO in Riyadh.
This treaty aims to standardize industrial design protection procedures globally, reducing administrative burdens and encouraging innovation, particularly for independent designers, startups, and SMEs.
India’s decision marks a shift in its approach to international IPR treaties, aligning with global standards while preserving flexibility in areas such as grace periods and publication deferment.
The treaty also supports the protection of traditional knowledge. India retains the option to make reservations, ensuring it can tailor the provisions to national needs.
