The Chhattisgarh High Court observed that large-scale conversions of tribals to Christianity through coercion, inducement, or deception have disrupted social harmony and caused local tensions, boycotts, and violence.
Emphasising that India’s secularism rests on mutual coexistence and respect, the Court stated that mass or motivated conversions compromise the unity and cultural identity of indigenous communities.
These remarks were made while hearing petitions challenging restrictions on the entry of Christians into certain villages.
The Court underscored the need to balance freedom of religion with the preservation of tribal heritage and social order.
