Interim Protection Granted to 17th-Century Agra Hammam by Allahabad HC

  • Case Name: Chandrapal Singh Rana Vs. Archaeological Survey of India and Ors
  • Judge(s): Justice Salil Rai, Justice Samit Gopal

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by one Chandrapal Singh Rana to protect the 17th-century Hammam of Ali Vardi Khan, a heritage site in Agra, from demolition by "illegal and unauthorised person".

It was pointed out, an October 2023 Archaeological Survey confirmed its historical significance.

Rana's counsel argued that it is the ASI's statutory duty to protect such monuments under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

The Court granted interim protection, directing the ASI, local police, and Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology Department to safeguard the monument.

The next hearing is scheduled for January 27, 2025.
